I need more time to myself

Why it is important to have time to yourself

Taking care of your relative is important to you but can sometimes be very stressful.  You will not be able to help anybody if you allow yourself to get run down or sick.  It is very important to the whole family that you do not forget to take care of yourself.  You need to take care of yourself so that you are able to do the things you want to do with your family and your life.  This means taking time away from your daily responsibilities.  One way to get more time for yourself is to take advantage of respite and day treatment programs available for the person with mental illness.

How can I make more time for myself?

1.      Respite care

What do people mean when they talk about respite care?  It means that someone else will take care of your relative for a short time.   This may mean your relative has a brief, supervised stay elsewhere.  It may mean someone will look after your relative for a few hours in your home.  Remember, it is important for you to get breaks to take care of personal matters or to relax and relieve stress.  Using available respite care is one way to accomplish this important goal.

For information on respite care contact your relative's, or therapist at Colorado Recovery
