Will I die young because I have schizophrenia?

People with schizophrenia tend to die at a younger age.  They tend to die younger because of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.  This is because they:

bullet

Are more likely to use alcohol

bullet

Are more likely to smoke.

bullet

Are more likely to be homeless and get no regular health care.

bullet

Are less likely to receive quality health care.

bullet

Are less likely to have yearly physical check-ups.

bullet

Are less likely to exercise and eat right.

bullet

They also have a higher wish of suicide.

Ways to make sure you stay healthy

bullet

Avoid alcohol and illegal drugs.

bullet

Smoke less, or stop smoking.

bullet

Get a physical each year and adequate health care.

bullet

Bring a family member with you when you go to see a doctor.

bullet

Make sure to tell your family and friends how you are feeling.

bullet

Exercise and eat right.

bullet

If you are feeling sad or start to think about suicide, talk to your doctor.  Also talk to a friend, a family member, or someone who can help.
